Dog-friendly beaches in Croatia

Many Croatian beaches do not allow dogs, so it pays to know where your four-legged companion is welcome before you set off.

The beaches below are listed as dog-friendly. Local rules can change during peak season, so check signs on arrival.

The rules for dogs on Croatian beaches

Croatia does not have a single nationwide rule. Each municipality decides which beaches allow dogs, and many popular town beaches ban them in summer. Officially designated dog beaches exist in several places along the coast, often marked with a sign.

Outside the signed areas, the unwritten rule is: the further from the town centre and the earlier in the day, the more relaxed it is. In July and August, fines are occasionally enforced at busy beaches.

What to bring for your dog

Shade is the big one — most Croatian beaches have little of it, and dogs overheat fast on hot pebbles. Bring fresh water and a bowl; seawater makes dogs sick if they drink too much while swimming.

Rocky entries can be tough on paws. If your dog is not used to stone beaches, start with short sessions and check their pads afterwards.

    Good etiquette

Keep your dog close when other swimmers are around, and always clean up. The beaches that stay dog-friendly are the ones where owners are considerate — one bad season can get a beach banned for the next.
