Best pebble beaches in Croatia
Pebble beaches are the classic Croatian beach — and the reason the water stays so clear, since there is no sand to cloud it.
Tip: water shoes make getting in and out much more comfortable.

Why the water is so clear
Pebbles do not cloud the water the way sand does, which is why Croatia's famous turquoise colour is at its best on pebble beaches. The white stone also reflects sunlight back through the water, giving the sea its bright colour.
The water usually gets deep faster than at sandy beaches — great for swimming, something to keep in mind with small children.
Making pebbles comfortable
The two things regulars never forget: water shoes and a thick mat or air lounger. With those two, a pebble beach is every bit as comfortable as sand — and your towel stays clean.
Many developed pebble beaches rent sunbeds, and beach bars are common at the larger ones.
The famous ones — and the quiet ones
Croatia's most photographed beaches are pebble beaches, and the well-known ones get busy. The good news: the coast is full of pebble coves with the same clear water and a fraction of the people. The list below includes both.
Good to know
- Water shoes are the single best investment for a Croatian holiday.
- A thick mat or air lounger makes pebbles as comfy as sand.
- Pebble bays get deep faster — better for swimmers, watch small kids.
- The clearest water of the day is usually in the morning.
